My business Partner James forwarded this to me today – some great advice on leadership and worth passing along:

The most important thing a leader has to do is absolutely search, treasure and nourish the voice and dignity of every person in the organization.

When we, as leaders, can rid ourselves of the need to be right, we can live up to Jack Welch’s words. Challenge yourself to go through a day without making someone a loser. It’s a lot harder than you might think. However, it is well worth the effort. No one wants to be proven wrong, even if they are wrong. Enlightened leaders know the importance of creating win/win situations and continually work to accomplish that objective.

Slow down to show that you care. We get so wrapped up in the day-to-day issues and/or problems that we lose sight of our role as leaders, that is to nurture and encourage our people. The next time you feel frustrated, hurried and/or otherwise overwhelmed – slow down. Spend the quality time talking about the right issues with your people, they will respond better and know you care.

Be a lighthouse, not a weather vane.” How do you react in difficult situations? So the next time the difficulties arise, remember your role. Don’t just react. Provide a vision of the preferred outcome and help your people understand how to get through the problem.

In part one I will cover the basic requirements needed to install Version 1.5 of Joomla – the award winning open source content management system.

Joomla can be installed on localhost if you wish to run it there before deploying it to a hosted environment. This is a good alternative for learning your way around Joomla and building your sites before incurring hosting costs or moving to your production servers.

To install Joomla 1.5 you will need the following (this installation assumes Apache web server):

PHP Version 4.3.x or higher (Version 5.0.x considered optimum) – Ensure that you have the MySQL, XML, and Zlib functionality enabled in your PHP install – configured in the php.ini file.

MySQL Version 3.23.x or higher (Version 5.0.x considered optimum)

Apache 1.3 or above (Version 2.0.61 considered optimum)

If you are running a Windows based pc and wish to run Joomla on localhost WAMP is a very straightforward and easy method to use. You can download the WAMP server here – http://www.wampserver.com/en/

WampServer will allow you to run an Apache, MySQL, and PHP web environment on your Windows machine which can be configured to duplicate your production environment. This will allow you to fully install and test your Joomla sites prior to deploying them.

In my next post I will cover the actual installation of the Joomla CMS software including a quick check of your environment to ensure you are ready for Joomla.

The STUFF Function is used to replace one string in your data with another string. It deletes a specified length of characters from a string beginning at a specified start position and replaces them with another string beginning at the start position. The STUFF is very useful when you wish to only replace one specific string as opposed to the REPLACE function which replaces every occurence of the string in the data.

The syntax for STUFF is -

STUFF ( character_expression , start , length , replacement_characters )

The STUFF function can be used to accomplish many useful tasks, below is an example using STUFF to insert dashes into a social security number.

DECLARE @vSnum VARCHAR(11)

SELECT @vSnum =‘123456789′

SELECT @vSnum,STUFF(STUFF(@vSnum,4,0,‘-’),7,0,‘-’)

SQL Injection Detection and Defense

Microsoft has released tools to help website developers in their defense against SQL injection on sites that use ASP and ASP.Net technologies. The tools include URLScan 3.0 (which is in beta release) and Microsoft Source Code Analyzer for SQL Injection (MSCASI), available as a Community Technology Preview.

Hewlett Packard has also developed a free scanner which can identify whether sites are susceptible to SQL injection dubbed Scrawlr.

Developed to help battle recent SQL injection attacks as per a Microsoft Security Advisory bulletin, the tools are intended to help developers build more secure code and promote a more trusted ecosystem, Microsoft said.

There has been a recent rise in SQL injection attacks exploiting unverified user data input. When these attacks are successful, a hacker/ attacker can compromise data stored in databases and possibly execute remote code. Clients browsing to a compromised server could be forwarded to malicious sites that may install malware on the client machine.
